Community mourns former mayor, youth center namesake

Madera’s youth center namesake John W. Wells died on Monday in Grover Beach. He was 86. The former teacher and mayor of Madera served on the Madera City Council from 1964 to 1976 and again from 1990 to 2006.

Wells served as mayor from 1968 to 1971 and in 1993, 1999 and 2004, according to City Clerk Sonia Alvarez.

Born the eldest of nine children to John Martin Wells and Mary (Carter) Wells, he attended Madera Union High School for seven semesters and graduated from Chowchilla Union High School in 1947.

Wells served in the U.S. Army as a member of the famous Wolfhound Division in the Korean Conflict. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart medal. After his active duty, he remained for many years in the Army Reserves and retired with the rank of captain...
