Coarsegold Elementary School seventh graders and eighth graders from Ranchos Middle School were victors in the 2014 Academic Pentathlon, an annual five-event academic competition. The pentathlon included 30 teams from 16 schools in Madera County — the most in its 29-year history.
Ranchos Middle School placed second in the seventh grade competition and first-time competitor Wilson Middle School, of Chowchilla, came in third. In the eighth grade competition, Oak Creek Intermediate School won second and Coarsegold Elementary School took third.
The two-day contest, organized by the Madera County Office of Education, tested students in math, literature, speech, essay writing and in a Super Quiz.
The public Super Quiz featured two rounds of timed questions, which were answered by teams of seventh and eighth graders about the topic “Islam and Medieval Africa.” Seventh and eighth grade teams in the Super Quiz consisted of four to six members, who answered a total of 30 questions.
