Club to send girls to science camp

Five Madera County girls will receive $900 scholarships to attend a week-long camp called Tech Trek at Fresno State University this summer.

Lorena Camacho and Karina Hinojosa of La Vina Elementary School, Holly Hiatt and Brooke Yang of Ranchos Middle School and Ariana Prudente of Desmond Middle School were selected out of 14 qualified applications. Alternates are Annaly Luna and Annie Martinez, both of La Vina Elementary School.

The scholarships, provided by American Association of University Women, finance hands-on learning of science, technology, engineering and math at a camp designed for 8th grade students. Camp activities include outdoor learning opportunities such as water safety, canoeing and identifying and casting wildlife footprints found along the San Joaquin River.
