City water billing going from flat to metered rate

Residents who get their water from the City of Madera will be billed based on water usage rather than a flat rate beginning Aug. 1, officials announced this week.

“The first change will be seen on the July 1 billing,” said Steve Hughes, utility billing supervisor for the City of Madera. “There won’t be any water consumption charges due to the fact that we currently bill (the flat rate) for the following month. We charge July 1 for all of the water consumed in July. Now that we are switching, we’ll have to wait until Aug. 1 to bill for July’s consumption to bill at the metered rates.”

Residents will notice a decrease in the water portion of their utilities bill in July, then the bill will return to about normal in August, Hughes said.

“There is a possibility that people who are trying to be environmentally conscious could see a decrease in their monthly utility bill,” he said. “But those who use more water might see their bills go up.” ...
