All Madera police units have been placed on heightened alert to patrol city streets for gang activity in the wake of recent gang violence, including a murder Wednesday.
The gang sweeps will continue as long as necessary, police said.
All available officers have been stopping and identifying any individuals displaying gang colors, or who appear to be involved in gang activities.
The Wednesday murder of 16-year-old Jesus (Jesse) Espinoza, who was shot four times in the stomach, allegedly by another teenager, and died of his wounds, raised awareness of increased gang activity in the city.
