Trash would no longer go to county landfill

The Madera City Council tonight will vote whether to change its garbage hauler.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with a closed session. Open session begins at 6:30 p.m.

The city does not collect or haul its own garbage, but hires a contractor to do it.

If the vote tonight is to change contractors, the city will end its longtime relationship with Allied Waste and begin a 10-year contract with Sunset Waste Systems of Fresno. The change will take place Jan. 1, 2013, at the end of the present contracts...
