City Council chooses new garbage hauler

Madera will have a new garbage hauler at the beginning of 2013, ending a longtime relationship with Allied Waste, the present hauler.

The City Council Wednesday night gave the contract for the next 10 years to Sunset Waste of Fresno, the low bidder among nine garbage contractors who responded to the city’s request for proposals issued last fall.

The vote to award the contract to Sunset was 4-1, with Council Member Sally Bomprezzi voting no. She said she wasn’t confident Sunset could keep its promises for the amount promised.

Sunset’s bid was $3.7 million per year over the next 10 years. Allied Waste, which was the fourth-lowest bidder, offered to do the work for $4.9 million annually...
