In an uncommon display of citizen crime fighting, an alleged burglar on an apparent AB109 probation release was caught red-handed and detained by several Maderans until police arrived early Wednesday morning.

Jeremy Williams, 37, was allegedly burglarizing a garage on the 200 block of N. K. St. in central Madera around 5:20 a.m. when residents of the home confronted him. Williams, with a “long list of arrests and convictions” according to Madera Police Sgt. Matt Wiles, put heels to pavement and fled westbound down 5th street after that confrontation.

Along the way, a citizen waiting for a ride to work saw the victims chasing Williams, surmised what was happening, and stuck out his foot to trip him up.

“The residents, witnesses, and the citizen held Williams down until officers arrived,” Wiles wrote on a Facebook post related to the incident...
