CHOWCHILLA — An 80-year-old man was killed Friday afternoon on State Route 99 just south of Avenue 24 after he lost control of his car and struck a large tree head on. The crash occurred in clear weather about 2:30 p.m., between heavy rain storms moving through the area.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael Donnelly said the cold and rainy weather did not appear to be a factor in the solo car crash.

Donnelly said the man has been identified as Ruben Macias Navarro of Chowchilla, and he may have had a medical problem behind the wheel that caused or contributed to the crash.

“It wasn’t raining at the time, although the roadway was damp,” Donnelly said. “No other vehicles were involved. It appears the driver lost control for unknown reasons and drifted off the right hand side of the roadway at highway speed. He just missed a sign post and struck the tree directly head on, resulting in the fatality. Family members said he had been at the doctor’s earlier in the week and had possibly even been at the doctor’s today.” ...
