Child molestation case delayed

A Madera man convicted on six counts of felony child molestation will go back to trial late this month to face additional criminal charges, Madera County District Attorney Michael Keitz said Wednesday evening.

Roy Ornelas, 47, was convicted last month on six counts of felony child molestation against a girl for at least 10 years that started when she was eight years old, Keitz said.

A family friend came forward and told authorities about Ornelas’ actions, Keitz said, which led to his arrest in 2011.

Ornelas was scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday for those counts — facing up to 48 years in prison — but Keitz said a hung jury on some of the charges, including Ornelas’ alleged attempts to prevent witnesses from testifying, would necessitate a retrial...
