Cesar Chavez Elementary School students in Madera celebrated the birthday of Latino civil rights activist César Chávez on Friday by doing community service and watching a performance by a group of dancing horses.

“We celebrate César Chávez Day with a day of community service,” said Stephanie McPherson, the school’s vice principal. “We celebrate every year because we want to teach our kids and instill in them the value of community service.”

Students participated in community service projects on campus Friday that included cleaning and beautifying the school, McPherson said.

All month long the students also brought and collected pocket change to donate to the Madera County Food Bank, McPherson said...
