MODESTO — A Stanislaus County judge said Thursday she would decide by next week whether allegedly-incriminating text messages between a Madera murder suspect and his purported conspirator would be allowed in trial.

Prosecutors believe that Dustin Gran, 25, and Brittany Navarra, 22, exchanged the messages and potentially damning photos in the case of Krista Pike, 18, found dead in a Madera home in January 2008.

Judge Marie Silveira said her ruling on whether messages extracted from the duo’s phones by digital forensics experts would be admissible under the legal “Frye” standard — a three-pronged test of scientific evidence’s validity — would be finalized Monday.

Some messages, such as “go a head just kill her” (sic) supposedly sent by Navarra to Gran before he allegedly murdered Pike, could prove crucial in establishing a connection between the suspects...
