Local groups hold annual charity event

A true Thanksgiving meal was made a reality for 40 families on Monday as Thrive Fitness and First 5 Madera County came together to hand out traditional holiday food to Madera citizens as part of the two groups’ third annual Thanksgiving dinner giveaway.

From inside the First 5 Family Resource Center at 525 E. Yosemite Ave., food was laid across tables as needy families, many with young children in tow, moved along the line and accepted the meals with words of thanks.

“We’re really grateful and thankful for the work they’ve done,” Lucia Lopez, 32, said. “This helps so much.”

Lopez said that in August she lost her job at the Madera Coalition, a nonprofit community organization, as a result of budget cuts and that the meal would go to feed her family of six...
