Caring for U.S. troops: Madera Ranchos group raises funds for items to send servicemembers

A Madera Ranchos ministry collected donations last weekend to create more than 100 care packages to send to U.S. troops.

Lifetree, a ministry of Madera Ranchos Assembly of God Church, has sent more than 2,200 care packages to troops over five years, said ministry leader Pam Hansen.

The ministry calls the project Word From Home and collects donations from the community to pay for items including socks, beef jerky, candy, gum, batteries, phone cards, CDs — and the cost to ship them.

“We meet once a month to send the packages off to whatever addresses we get. People ask us to send packages to the troops they know are overseas,” Hansen said. “Sometimes we send 60 a month, other months we only send a few depending on how many addresses we get.” ...
