The Madera District Chamber of Commerce, along with The Madera Tribune, will sponsor three candidate forums in coming weeks. They will feature presentations by candidates for local offices, along with a question-and-answer session by a panel of questioners.

The primary election has been set for June 3.

The first candidate forum has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at the VFW Hall, 2026 Granada Drive. It will be for candidates for Madera County sheriff/coroner. Whoever wins election will replace Sheriff/Coroner John Anderson, who said he would retire at the end of his term, Dec. 31.

Those running and expected to appear at the forum are:

  • Michael Kime of Madera; he is former police chief of Madera and a law-enforcement consultant.
  • Michael Salvador of Madera; he is undersheriff of Madera County and a member of the Madera Unified School District Board of Trustees.
  • Jay Varney of Chowchilla; he is police chief and former interim city administrator of the City of Chowchilla.
  • Gregory Noll of Oakhurst; he is a sergeant with the Fresno Police Department.
  • Dennis Fairbanks of Coarsegold; he is a retired California Highway Patrol supervisor.
  • Frank Gauthier of Madera County; he is a former Madera County deputy sheriff, a corporate security manager and an Air Force veteran.

The second session featuring a different slate of candidates has been scheduled for 6 p.m. a week later, March 31, also at the VFW Hall...
