Kids come to lessons crying but leave happy after learning to swim

After 38 years, Red Cross swimming instructor Randy Durbin is still doing what he loves — teaching children how to swim.

“We’re saving lives and giving kids one thing to remember,” he said during Red Cross swim lessons at the Madera South High School swim complex.

Durbin and his group of water safety instructors give lessons Monday through Friday every hour from 12-7 p.m. Each session lasts 45 minutes and will go for two weeks through August.

Durbin, who has been giving lessons since 1975, loves to see the kids progress in the pool...
