Caltrans delays 4th Street widening

A road improvement project that will add lanes to 4th Street near its State Route 99 on- and off-ramps in Madera has been delayed, city officials announced this week.

Caltrans put a halt on the city’s project because it wants to finish its State Route 99 improvements first, said City Engineer Keith Helmuth.

“Nobody is happy with it — you will see traffic backed up several hundred feet trying to get through the signals onto 4th Street,” Helmuth said. “So we are disappointed in the delay. It was a surprise to the city.”

The project, formally called the State Route 99/4th Street Interchange Improvements Project, includes roadwork on 4th Street between K Street and 0.1 mile east of Gateway Drive...
