Ed Ray, the bus driver who saved 26 Chowchilla schoolchildren kidnapped and buried in a bus in 1976, died Thursday morning. He was 91.

Chowchilla residents and friends remembered Ray as a man of great character and courage.

Ray was driving a bus for Alview-Dairyland Union School District with 26 children on July 15, 1976, when three men forced all of them out of the bus and into two vans. The men were planning to demand ransom for the victims, who were driven around for 11 hours before being buried in a quarry in Livermore.

Ray calmed the children down and with their help managed to get all of them freed 16 hours later...
