More than 800 attend event at local fairgrounds

Dog enthusiasts across the state showed their pets in Madera this weekend to celebrate their passion for the “Bully” dog breeds.

Pitbulls, American staffs, English and French bulldogs, bull terriers and other bulldog breeds were on display Saturday at the Madera District Fairgrounds.

The dogs, called Bullies, are an evolving breed but have been well established over the last 10 years, according to show organizers Mike Lopez and Tony Flores, of Fresno.

“Bullies are crosses of pitbulls, bulldogs, and American staffs, and are family pets. We want to dispel the notion that these are fighting or gang dogs. They are not,” Lopez said. “Our group, Team Dogg Pound of Fresno, has many professional members and our breeding standards are for conformation and temperament.” ...
