A brush fire in the center divider of State Route 99, between avenues 7 and 9, clouded the roadway, causing many drivers to slow on Friday afternoon.

The flames, which were put out in about half an hour by Cal Fire, were not directly obstructing traffic, said California Highway Patrol Sergeant J. Johnson.

“Traffic slowed and came to a stop not because the fire was a problem, but because they were just gawking,” he said.

There were no accidents reported as a result of the fire, authorities said.
