The Madera Breakfast Lions Club is helping families stay close to their hospitalized children by saving and donating hundreds of pounds of pull tabs from soda cans.

The local club is one of the top collectors in their area, District 4A-1, which includes 63 Lions clubs from Stockton to Madera, the mountains and the Central Valley.

Breakfast Lion members Robert “Bob” Garibay and Gary Svanda, in a coordinated effort with the other Lions clubs, have collected nearly 3,000 pounds of pull tabs since the project began three years ago.

For every 10 pounds of tabs delivered, a family receives a free night’s stay. Ronald McDonald House then recycles the tabs. Their effort has allowed families who have a child at Children’s Hospital Central California or a surrounding hospital to stay for 296 nights at no cost...
