Nearly two dozen brass floral holder brackets were stolen from a Chowchilla Cemetery mausoleum over the weekend, and the Madera County Sheriff’s Department is looking for those responsible for the theft, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart.
A cemetery caretaker said all of the brackets were in place at 4:30 p.m. Friday, but were discovered missing about 3 p.m. Monday, Stuart said.
The brass brackets had been pried off of the mausoleum’s chambers, desecrating at least 21 interment spaces. The crime is believed to have occurred at the cemetery, on Road 14 1/2 just south of Avenue 23 1/2, over the weekend or as late as Monday morning, Stuart said.
