Guests at Oakhurst Lodge awake to crackle of flames

Visitors staying at the Oakhurst Lodge on Highway 41, near Avenue 426, said they were awakened by the frightening sounds of crackling fire, and called 911 early Wednesday morning as flames burst through the roof and a back wall of a wing of the hotel.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.

Cal Fire Battalion Chief Chris Christopherson said the fire was reported just after midnight by a guest. She said the blaze had likely been burning in the attic and or walls for some time.

Firefighters faced a 20 to 30 foot wall of flames on their arrival. One wing of the 60 unit hilltop lodge was destroyed and the loss could exceed $1 million, according to an estimate. Heavy smoke blanketed the area...
