A weekend long event set to start on Saturday will feature the hand-crafted creations of a local group of women. The 2013 Quilt Show, organized by the Heart of California Quilter’s Guild, will showcase the work of local quilters as well as that of a variety of vendors from other communities who specialize in other types of crafts. At least 140 quilts will be displayed, organizers said.
The Heart of California Quilter’s Guild, which includes about 85 members, will especially highlight the work of two: Wanda Beck and Juanita Blumberg.
The event, themed “Quilts From Our Hearts” will also include door prizes, a silent auction, a Quilter’s Attic, a treasure hunt for children, demonstrations and food for sale. The Quilter’s Attic will feature quilting products —such as fabrics, quilting magazines and pattern books— donated by members for sale. The Quilter’s Attic serves as a fundraiser for the guild. The group also raises money all year long through the sale of raffle tickets for its “Opportunity Quilt.” This year’s queen size bedspread, called “Sangria,” is a mix of orange and red colors and “very festive looking,” said Kathleen Lopes, the publicity chair for the event.
Since its completion in January, members have been selling tickets for the quilt at various events throughout Madera and will have them on sale during the 2013 Quilt Show, too. The drawing is set to take place in December, said Lopes...
