When Wanda Mortimer describes a child she’s mentored for more than a year as quiet, it’s not hard to believe as a sturdy, taller-than-the average, dark-haired 11-year-old sits by her and nods to most of what she says.

Yet Louis Kent says before he met Mortimer in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central California, he was even more shy.

“I never used to talk before but now I always talk,” said Kent.

His mother, Diane Kent, who raises Louis and his two siblings on her own, signed him up for the mentoring program against his will when he was 10 years old, he said...
