A 20-year-old Madera man was struck and killed Thursday afternoon as he rode his bicycle on Avenue 12 near Road 25, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP Sgt. Jon Johnson said the man was riding southbound on Road 25 about 2 p.m. when he turned onto the shoulder of Avenue 12.

“He was riding on the shoulder, with an iPod and had earbuds on. For unknown reasons he then turned to cross Avenue 12 ... directly in front of a semi truck pulling a trailer. The semi truck swerved and managed to miss him, but he was struck and killed by the side of the trailer,” Johnson said.

The name of the victim is not being released pending notification of family members. CHP officials are investigating the incident...
