Car wash to aid girl with cancer
It may have been a gray, overcast morning that set the scene for a car wash fundraiser at the Madera-Lions Town and Country Park on Saturday, but nothing was going to keep dozens of volunteers from high spirits and sunny smiles.
From children as young as 2 to teenagers and grandparents, the volunteers – more than 30 in number and many sporting yellow T-shirts reading “Abby’s Crew” — sold food and T-shirts as they washed more than 100 cars to raise money for Abby Grace Needham, the 4-year-old Madera girl diagnosed with pineoblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer.
Jamie Gallegos, head of youth ministries at Good News Ministries church in Madera, was the lead organizer of the car wash. He said Sunday that donations were still coming in through the website set up for Abby’s cause, www.angelshelpingabby.com.
“We’ve raised around $6,000 so far,” Gallegos said. “That’s from the cars, food, everything. It’s just amazing. I think we even sold over 300 hot dogs… Everyone in this community is just so great.”...
