Basketball club aims to fight cancer

A local basketball club is seeking sponsorship and help from the community to host its annual Fight Cancer Classic tournament to raise money for breast cancer research.

Elite Force, an Amateur Athletic Union basketball league in Madera, has pledged to raise $1,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation this year with the help of the Madera community, said organizer Michelle Alexander.

“We’re really excited to have the community help our efforts to try to stamp out cancer,” she said.

More than 130 Madera children play in the league, which includes teams for 8 and under, 10 and under, 12 and under, and high school girls and boys.

Forty-two teams from across California will gather at Madera South High School on March 31 and April 1 for the fourth annual tournament...
