Award-winning author Tim Z. Hernandez is set to meet with locals to discuss writing, specifically poetry, and conduct writing exercises during a free workshop on April 30. Hernandez, who is also a performance artist, won the 2006 American Book Award for his debut collection of poetry "Skin Tax."

His debut novel "Breathing, In Dust" was featured on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, and went on to receive the 2010 Premio Aztlan prize in fiction from the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, N.M.

Hernandez also plans to discuss memoir writing and how to get published in his Write Where You Are Workshop from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Blanche Galloway Room of the Madera County Library headquarters, 121 N. G St.

The event is put on by the Madera County Library, Poets & Writers, Inc. and the California Center for the Book. For information, call the library, 675-7871.
