Authorities: Business owners assaulted officer

An Oakhurst couple was charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a peace officer after the two tried to prevent health inspectors from entering their business, the Madera County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Rita Smith, 54, and 57- year-old Steve Smith were arrested at Heaven Scent Organic Horti-Pharm Collective after they tried to force the door shut when inspectors arrived, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart.

According to reports, Environmental Health inspectors were in Oakhurst Friday morning conducting routine health and safety checks on area businesses that sell food.

A deputy assisting Environmental Health tried to keep the door open but said both suspects came charging at them. When deputies tried to detain the suspects, Rita reportedly kicked one of the deputies, Stuart said...
