Attempted murder sentence continued

The sentencing of a Madera man convicted of a 2011 attempted murder was continued Wednesday until July 12, where it is expected he will face 37 years to life in prison.

Jose Luis Matador, 23, was convicted last month of felony attempted murder and felony participation in a criminal street gang with two penalty enhancements for use of a firearm and committing a crime to benefit a gang.

Matador — an admitted member of the El-Salvador-based Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) street gang from the age of 15 — was walking a friend home almost two years ago when he pulled a gun, put it to the friend’s head, and fired.

The two got into a struggle near North G Street and Roberts Avenue before Matador fired more shots at the victim, identified only as “Manuel” during trial...
