A lightning-caused forest fire continued to burn Friday afternoon east of Fresno in the Sierra National Forest, having consumed some 4,500 acres with virtually no containment.

Smoke from the blaze, dubbed the Aspen Fire, was roiling through the Sierra foothills of Madera, Fresno and Kings counties.

According to information from Sierra National Forest headquarters, the fire, first reported July 23, was burning near Stump Springs Road, north of Aspen Springs on Friday afternoon.
