Aspen fire nears its end

The U.S. Forest Service issued a final update late last week on a fire that has burned for more than half a month inside the Sierra National Forest, suggesting that the inferno was now well under control.

Saturday’s update said the Aspen fire -—some 55 miles east-northeast of Madera — sat just under 90 percent containment.

The blaze, which began July 22 from a lightning strike, had burned 22,172 acres of forestland, the update said.

The cost of fighting the fire increased to $27.8 million, with 912 personnel still working on containing the flames, rehabilitating forest land, and mopping up debris, the update said...
