Aspen fire has burned 16,000 acres

Nearly 150 more personnel were called in Thursday to fight a forest fire northeast of Fresno that has burned more than 16,200 acres, according to an update from the United States Forest Service.

Called the Aspen fire because of its proximity to Aspen Springs, the fire has grown in size and severity since a lightning strike sparked it on July 22.

The fire is 40 percent contained, the update read, a five-percent increase in containment from Wednesday, though 200 more acres burned in the same time period as the fire continues to expand.

Because of the need for 1,947 firefighting personnel — an increase from nearly 1,800 Wednesday — the cost of stopping the inferno has reached $12.8 million, the update said...
