Central Valley artists are encouraged to apply to transform an unplayable instrument into a work of art for the Painted Violin Project 2014.

Ten artists will be chosen — and given violins to paint — by the Youth Orchestras of Fresno. Winning violins will tour Valley art galleries for three months and then be auctioned May 24 to benefit young musicians.

This year’s theme is “Ode to Joy!” Applicants whose art best exemplifies a fusion of music and joy will be favored, officials said.

Applications, available online at www.YouthOrchestraFresno.org under the Events tab, are due Nov. 18. Finalists will be announced Dec. 1, and completed violins must be returned to Youth Orchestras by Feb. 1...
