The Madera County Arts Council (MCAC) awarded four students who plan to pursue art in college with $1,000 scholarships this year.
Angel de Leon, who graduated from Madera High School, plans to use the scholarship to pay for tuition at Fresno Pacific University, where he will study graphic design.
In his personal statement, de Leon said he moved to Madera from Mexico in 2009 with his mother after his father’s death. Because of a mistake in his immigration paperwork, he must wait four years to obtain his residency. His mother, 59, is a farm worker.
“I want to help my mom financially, but because of my immigration status I am unable to have a job,” he wrote. “There are numerous scholarships out there that require me to be a U. S. resident or a citizen, but once again, my immigration status stands in between. Financial aid does not apply to me. The only resources I have are scholarships like this one.” ...
