Apostle celebrated by Coatecas natives

A religious and cultural celebration that’s quickly become an annual tradition in Madera drew more people than it ever has before, according to organizers.

La Fiesta del Pueblo 2013, hosted by the natives of San Juan Coatecas Altas, Oaxaca, honored their town’s patron saint St. John the apostle. More than 600 people gathered for a midday Mass at St. Joachim Catholic Church and the party that followed at Holy Spouses Hall on Saturday.

Natives of San Juan Coatecas Altas started the re-creation of their town’s yearly celebration in Madera in 2009.

“This is very important to us because, unfortunately, not all of us have the opportunity to go back to San Juan during the fiestas there, so we wanted to give that chance to those who can’t make it, to celebrate here and to show their children what our festivities are like,” said Silvano Garcia, a member of the organizing committee...
