Another phone scam hits county

Madera County Sheriff John Anderson cautioned residents Wednesday that another phone scam has come to town; this time with wannabe thieves guised as the federal government.

The sheriff’s office received a complaint from a lady Wednesday morning that she got a call from a “000-000” phone number.

On the other end of the line was someone telling her that “the federal government was awarding $9,000 grants to citizens who pay their taxes on time and have a clean record.”

The would-be scammer said he needed the victim’s driver’s license information and either a checking account or credit card number to “expedite payment,” Anderson said...
