A former elementary school teacher who has donated her time to tutor young at-risk students in reading for five years has been named Alpha Elementary School’s Volunteer of the Year.
Rose Meister taught for 36 years before retiring in 1994 and, with the encouragement of former colleagues, trained to become a Reading Recovery teacher in July of 1998. Alpha employed her in that role for seven years.
“Helping children learn and grow academically has always been one of her greatest passions in life,” the school said in a written statement.
She worked one-on-one with at-risk 1st grade students. “During this time, Rose developed a great admiration for this program as she saw how it was benefiting the students and helping them to grow in self confidence,” the school said...
