An Ahwahnee couple killed in a motorcycle crash on Avenue 21 near Road 31 Saturday night has been identified, the Madera County Sheriff’s Department said Monday.

Gary Andrew Smalz, 60, and Laura Smalz, 52, were killed after a pickup turned in front of them on Avenue 21 in Valley Lake Ranchos, sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

The driver of the pickup, 41-year-old Gary Ragsdale of Madera Ranchos, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also charged with two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter. He and a female passenger sustained cuts and bruises in the crash.

California Highway Patrol officers said the couple may have been attending a motorcycle rally in Madera earlier in the day...
