Changes in store for this year’s competition

Area high school students will compete in interview and essay competitions today to begin the 32nd annual Madera County Academic Decathlon. The winner will advance to the state competition in March.

Students from Chawanakee Academy, Chowchilla High, Liberty High, Madera High, Madera South High and Yosemite High will battle for the county championship today and Feb. 1.

This is the first year that the interview will be held on a separate day, a move that will allow for an increased number of participants — up to 25 students per team — and a shorter Saturday competition.

All 25 students are eligible for awards, with the final overall team score to be determined by the top three scoring students from each division. Divisions include honor, scholastic, and varsity; each division will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals for each subject...
