80 celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr., with words of hope

The late civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was honored Sunday in an annual celebration where students and educators spoke about leadership, education and overcoming obstacles.

About 80 people, including county and city officials, attended the gathering put on by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Local Host Committee in the cafeteria of MLK Middle School.

Art, poetry and speeches by students were presented, all tied to the theme, “Dreams of Today’s Students: Our Tomorrow’s Leaders,” which aimed to highlight King’s principles and ideals.

Prayer, music and praise were also part of the celebration...
