Event coordinator Peggy Gregory of the Sunrise Rotary Club stood by her colorfully decorated bicycle surrounded by more than 40 bike riders and walkers of all ages. The crowd listened to police officer Wayson Juarez’s instructions before leaving Rotary Park on the Vern McCullough River Trail for the initial Madera Bike Walk event.

Nearly all the participants had purchased a green T-shirt prior to the Saturday morning journey.

Sunrise Rotary, Madera Police, Parks and Community Services and Walmart sponsored the trek. The retailer donated bicycles for an after-trail raffle. Rotary Interact students from local high schools volunteered to assist. Mayor Pro Tem Donald Holley helped with registration. The police department escorted participants where the trail crosses the major streets of Schnoor Avenue and Granada Drive.

According to Gregory, the community event promoted exercise and brought awareness to the River Trail, which extends from Tulare Street in the east to Road 24, west of the city.
