Driver suspected of DUI

CHOWCHILLA — A driver suspected of DUI caused a traffic collision at Road 16 and Avenue 24 that seriously injured three Chowchilla residents, including a 2-year-old, the California Highway Patrol said.

The injured occupants were taken to Mercy Hospital in Merced with broken bones, multiple cuts and other abrasions.

The family was reportedly on the way to a Fourth of July barbecue with relatives when the crash occurred about 2 p.m.

Thomas L. McAbee, 46, of Fairmead was arrested on two counts of felony DUI and according to police records had multiple warrants out for his arrest for failing to appear on a previous DUI charge in 2011. He was also cited for driving on a suspended driver’s license and driving without registration and insurance, among other charges...
