Three Planada residents accused of trying to sell manhole covers that had been reported stolen in Merced remained in jail Thursday, according to Madera County Sheriff spokeswoman Erica Stuart.
Dorothy Jane Alt, 19, and Joy Dawn McKay, 37, entered a recycling business in Madera County just before 1 p.m. Wednesday and tried to sell the recycler three steel manhole covers. Isaac Gonzalez, 30, was waiting in their car parked outside.
The recycler called the Madera County Sheriff’s agricultural crimes detective Adam McEwen to report what he believed to be suspicious activity.
When McEwen arrived, the trio told him they had found the steel at a former labor camp in Planada. That camp, owned by Merced County, has been burglarized several times already, Stuart said...
