Top staff at schools honored

Two hundred fifty educators and friends of education attended the 7th annual Excellence in Education Awards Ceremony to honor Madera County’s top school employee, administrator, and teacher for 2013. In what resembled an Academy Awards ceremony, Sally Frazier, Ed.D, retired Madera County Superintendent of Schools, introduced the honorees at the gala, which was held at the Madera Municipal Golf Course Clubhouse Restaurant.

She was assisted by the current superintendent Cecilia Massetti, Ed.D, and Elizabeth Dooley, president and CEO of the Educational Employees Credit Union. The MCOE and EECU were co-hosts for the event, which was held Thursday evening.

The top school employee was Andres Del Villar-Juarez, head custodian with the Chowchilla School District. The top administrator was Art Davis, director of the Regional System of District and School Support for the Madera County Office of Education. Michele Chenowith, a math instructor at Yosemite High School, was named the teacher of the year.

The winners were chosen from several nominees in their respective categories. A selection committee, made up of Sarah Curley, Peggy Haupt, Pastor Roger Leach, Amy Varney, and Kim Van Alen made the selections. Sharing the stage and recognition were all of the nominees...
