When the Madera Tribune ran a story about Madera’s 2013 Senior Farmer of the Year in February, it described Sarkis Sahatdjian as a loving figure at the center of his large family — and as a 93-year-old workhorse.

Indeed, those descriptions still hold up as Sahatdjian continues to visit the offices of Victor Packing, Inc. — the company he co-founded in 1963 with his now-deceased brother Haig — at least two or three times a week.

“Being that I’m disabled, well that slowed me down a little,” Sahatdjian said of his schedule, which includes physical therapy for a replaced hip. “Twice a week is therapy day but the other days whenever I can I go … when you work all your life it’s hard to just quit all at once, but I enjoy being there.”

Victor Packing — which sits near Avenue 11 and Road 27 1/2 in Madera County — remains one of the Valley’s largest grape dehydration, packing, and shipping houses while celebrating its 50th anniversary this year...
