Mark Belden, a general contractor and business owner, is running for a seat in the California Assembly from the 5th District. He was born in Oakland and graduated from high school in Fremont. One week after his 21st birthday, Belden graduated with a bachelor’s degree in occupational health science from California State University, San Francisco.

Belden earned his master’s in occupational health science from the City University of New York and went to work in the occupational health field in New York and later in San Jose.

Later in life, Belden turned to his first love, which was building, and began renovating buildings in Stockton. He got a general building contractor’s license in 1994 and founded the MC Belden Co., developing steel frame home components.

Belden first ran for public office in 1992 when he sought a seat on the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors. In 2010 he ran for state Senate. A lifelong Republican, Belden now considers himself to be an independent, socially moderate, fiscal conservative...
