2012 local races: Isabel Barreras

Isabel Barreras knew she wanted to involve herself in community affairs when she enrolled in the Madera Center of the State Center Community College District. She was determined to get an education and prepare herself for public service in the community that has been her home for the last 38 years.

After graduating from the Madera Center, Barreras transferred to California State University, Fresno, and earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies in 2002. From there she enrolled at National University and graduated with a master’s of public administration in 2008.

In 2002, while employed with Madera Unified School District as an administrative assistant, Barreras ran for a seat on the State Center Community College District board and was successful. She has been returned to that office twice and is currently in her third term, which runs until 2014.

As a SCCCD trustee, Barreras says she has helped ensure the solvency of the district’s $161 million budget and has been part of making sure it has a healthy reserve...
