2 men appear in court for Fontes murder

Two of three men accused of murdering 44-year-old Madera man Gerald Fontes went into Mariposa County Court for a preliminary hearing Tuesday, and each took different steps as the case moves forward.

Richard Mirelez, 36, from Merced, and Patrick Lozano, 29, from Madera, have each previously pleaded not guilty of beating Fontes to death then hiding his body in late March 2012.

Police searched for Fontes for nearly two months with no leads before tourists discovered his body alongside Triangle Road in Mariposa in May.

Mirelez and Lozano were arrested a month later along with Jose Jimenez, 42, who reached a plea agreement last month, pleading guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter and one count of assault with a deadly weapon in exchange for 20 years in prison...
